Passed by voters in 2002, Proposition U is a a 35-year, $198 million bond measure that is used to fund construction, repairs and renovation at 24 schools within the Poway Unified School District. Specifically, the money is used to upgrade aging classrooms, modernize plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems, build additional classrooms to decrease overcrowding, and to add new science and technology classrooms.. A Citizen's Oversight Committee is in place to monitor expenditures of bond funds.
Prop U impacts a portion of homeowners within the boundaries of the Poway Unified School District. The cost of this bond to these homeowners is a maximum of $55 per $100,000 of assessed property value, per year. For example, a homeowner with an assessed property value of $500,000, will pay $275 per year.
